50 Years with ABBA: From a Poor Childhood in Korea to a Musical Night in Las Vegas**

Sometimes an old memory suddenly rises to the surface—quietly, unexpectedly. Today, one of the most precious memories of my life came back to me. A memory from 50 years ago, in the late 1970s.

Back then, my family didn’t have much. I can’t even remember clearly whether we had a TV at home. Maybe we watched at a friend’s house, or gathered with neighbors. In those days, a TV wasn’t just an appliance—it was an event.

But among all those blurry memories, one scene remains crystal clear: watching an ABBA movie at the theater with my mother.

🎬 ABBA: The Movie (1977) — The First Time I Saw Their World

It wasn’t just a concert film. It followed ABBA—two couples—traveling from city to city, singing, rehearsing, writing songs, meeting fans, and preparing for their shows. A documentary-style journey of their music and their lives.

I was a teenager. The world was slower then. Music came from radios and LP records. But inside that theater, ABBA’s sound felt like another universe.

Sitting next to my mother, watching the lights, the stage, the melodies pouring out of the speakers— that moment became one of the most unforgettable memories of my youth.

🎧 No LP, No Money — Just a Tape Recorder and a TV

We couldn’t afford LPs. So I listened to ABBA on cassette tapes. And honestly, even buying tapes was difficult.

Whenever ABBA appeared on a friend’s TV— a concert clip, a music show, anything— I would bring my little tape recorder and record the TV audio directly.

By today’s standards, the sound quality was terrible. Static, echo, background chatter, the TV humming. But to me, it was perfect. It was all I had, and it was everything.

✍️ Writing Down Lyrics by Hand

I listened to those tapes over and over, writing the English lyrics into a notebook, pausing, rewinding, correcting, and singing along.

ABBA’s lyrics were simple enough that I understood most of them. That was probably the beginning of my English learning.

But one song completely confused me: Chiquitita.

No dictionary, no internet, no way to look it up. I had no idea what the word meant. So I just sang it anyway— happily, loudly, without knowing the meaning. Thinking about it now makes me smile.

🎤 A Story I Learned Much Later — The Tokyo Music Festival

Decades later, I discovered something surprising. ABBA once competed at the Tokyo International Music Festival in the mid-70s.

And that year, Korean singer Jung Hoon-hee won the Grand Prize, while ABBA didn’t win anything.

I couldn’t believe it at first. ABBA, losing? But it was before they became global superstars, and the judging standards were different.

Still, learning that story brought back the atmosphere of that era— the innocence, the uncertainty, the beginning of something big.

🌍 And Then, 35 Years Later… ABBA Found Me Again in Las Vegas

Many years passed. I moved to America, raised my daughters, built a life. And one day, I went to see Mamma Mia! in Las Vegas.

That night was special. I took my two daughters and my dear friend Carol with me. The four of us sat in the front rows, close enough to feel the stage lights and the performers’ energy.

My daughters loved it. Carol said it was “too loud,” but I knew she enjoyed it— she has always loved music.

The colors, the dancing, the voices, ABBA’s songs filling the theater… It felt like my teenage years were coming back to life right in front of me.

That moment— the four of us sitting together, sharing the same music across three generations— is still vivid in my mind.

💛 Music That Survived 50 Years

ABBA’s music comforted my poor childhood, lifted me through adulthood, and connected me with my daughters and Carol

Fifty years have passed, but their music is still alive. And it is still with me.

So I write this down— as my own small piece of history, a memory that refuses to fade.

🎬 ABBA: The Movie (1977) —

Chiquitita.
