Caleb Mission and the Reality of North Korean Lives
Caleb Mission doesn’t need a long introduction. They quietly and consistently work to protect the human rights of North Korean people and help them move safely toward freedom.
Their importance is simple: North Koreans cannot choose freedom on their own.
People around the world know North Korea is a dictatorship. They know Kim Jong-un is an authoritarian leader. But very few understand how that dictatorship shapes everyday life, how it controls thought, choice, dreams, jobs, movement, information, and survival.
Juche(joo-che) ideology is not just political philosophy
— It is a system that controls daily life and thought
North Koreans grow up inside Juche ideology.
- Recited daily in schools
- Evaluated at workplaces
- Watched inside their own homes
- Information blocked
- Outside world erased
- The state above the individual
- The leader above the state
Juche is not “political education.” It is a way of life, and it removes every form of personal choice.
Dictatorship is not a political structure — it is a daily control system
People say “North Korea is a dictatorship,” but that phrase is too abstract.
In reality:
- No freedom of movement
- No choice of occupation
- No freedom of expression
- No religious freedom
- No access to outside information
- Constant surveillance
- One wrong word can punish an entire family
Dictatorship controls every hour of a person’s day.
This is why defection is not political — it is survival
Hun, you’re right. Foreigners do not understand the reality of defection.
Why people risk their lives, why the journey is deadly, why no one can do it alone, why they need help from specific organizations.
Defection is not “political asylum.” It is a last attempt to live as a human being.
Caleb Mission is the hand that guides people through that dangerous journey
There is no need to describe Caleb Mission in detail. They are already known globally, and people understand the nature of their work.
What matters is this:
They help people who choose survival over oppression, quietly, carefully, and at great personal risk.

- Prepare them for new lives
- Support them until they reach South Korea
This is not politics. This is humanitarian work. And for North Koreans, it is the only hope for survival.
Foreigners don’t know this reality — that’s why I write about it
Most people see North Korea as a headline, a distant country in the news.
But inside that country are real people, real lives, real suffering.
And in the middle of that suffering, there are people who quietly reach out a hand.
That is Caleb Mission.

갈렙선교회와 북한 주민들의 현실
갈렙선교회는 많은 설명이 필요 없는 단체다. 그들은 조용히, 그리고 꾸준히 북한 주민들의 인권을 보호하고 안전한 이동을 돕는 역할을 하고 있다.
이 단체가 중요한 이유는 단순하다. 북한 주민들은 스스로 자유를 선택할 수 없기 때문이다.
외국인들은 북한을 “독재국가”라고 말한다. 김정은이 독재자라는 사실도 알고 있다. 하지만 그 독재가 주민들의 일상에 어떻게 스며드는지, 그 체제가 사람들의 사고·선택·꿈·직업·이동·정보·삶 전체를 어떻게 제한하는지, 그걸 아는 사람은 거의 없다.
주체사상은 단순한 정치 이념이 아니다
— 주민들의 사고와 생활을 통제하는 시스템이다
북한 주민들은 태어나면서부터 주체사상 속에서 살아간다.
- 학교에서 매일 암송하고
- 직장에서 평가받고
- 가정에서도 감시받고
- 정보는 차단되고
- 외부 세계는 존재하지 않으며
- 개인보다 국가가 우선이고
- 국가보다 지도자가 우선이다
주체사상은 “사상 교육”이 아니라 생활 방식이다. 그리고 그 생활 방식은 주민들의 모든 선택권을 빼앗는다.
독재는 정치 체제가 아니라 ‘일상 통제 시스템’이다
외국인들은 “북한은 독재국가다”라고 말한다. 하지만 그 말은 너무 추상적이다.
실제로는:
- 이동의 자유가 없다
- 직업 선택권이 없다
- 표현의 자유가 없다
- 종교의 자유가 없다
- 정보 접근권이 없다
- 감시가 일상화되어 있다
- 잘못된 말 한마디가 가족 전체의 처벌로 이어진다
독재는 주민들의 하루 24시간을 통제하는 시스템이다.
그래서 탈북은 정치적 선택이 아니라 ‘생존의 선택’이다
왜 사람들이 탈북하는지, 왜 그 길이 목숨을 건 여정인지, 왜 혼자서는 절대 갈 수 없는지, 왜 특정 단체의 도움 없이는 국경을 넘을 수 없는지.
탈북은 “정치적 망명”이 아니라 인간으로서 살아남기 위한 마지막 선택이다.
갈렙선교회는 그 생존의 여정에서 ‘손을 잡아주는 사람들’이다
갈렙선교회를 장황하게 설명할 필요는 없다. 그들은 이미 전 세계에 알려져 있고, 그들이 무엇을 하는 단체인지도 많은 사람들이 알고 있다.
중요한 건 단 하나다.
그들은 북한 주민들이 인간답게 살기 위해 선택한 마지막 길을 조용히, 그리고 위험을 감수하며 돕는 사람들이다.
그들은:
- 위험한 길을 대신 고민하고
- 안전한 이동을 돕고
- 사람들을 보호하고
- 새로운 삶을 준비시키고
- 한국까지 도착할 수 있도록 지원한다
이건 정치가 아니라 인도주의다. 그리고 북한 주민들에게는 생존을 위한 유일한 희망이다.
외국인들은 이 현실을 모른다 — 그래서 나는 이 이야기를 쓴다
외국인들은 북한을 뉴스 속 국가로만 본다. 하지만 그 안에는 실제 사람이 있고, 실제 삶이 있고, 실제 고통이 있다.
그리고 그 고통 속에서 누군가가 조용히 손을 내밀어주는 단체가 있다.
그게 갈렙선교회다.
