🌵 Arizona’s Water Crisis Isn’t Just Tucson’s Problem

— The entire Southwest is slowly sinking, and we’re feeling the pressure at home

Living in Tucson means water isn’t just a resource — it’s a daily source of tension.

We replaced our home’s main water line three years ago, yet even after running the fridge filter twice, white sediment still settles at the bottom of the cup.

Most Tucson residents don’t care. “Water? It comes out of the tap, right?” That’s the general attitude.

But the real water conflict isn’t between Tucson neighbors. It’s happening on a much larger scale:

✔ Arizona vs. California

✔ The Colorado River allocation war

✔ Agriculture vs. cities

✔ Pecan–alfalfa–cotton vs. drinking water

This is the real battlefield.

🌊 Why Arizona and California Are Fighting Over Water

The Colorado River is shared by seven states. Arizona and California take the largest portions.

The problem:

  • The river has been drying for 20 years
  • Lake Mead is at historic lows
  • Hoover Dam’s power output is dropping
  • Cities and farms demand more water
  • California’s almonds, pistachios, and vegetables consume massive water
  • Arizona’s pecans, alfalfa, and cotton do the same

Two states. One shrinking river.

🌾 Where Does All the Water Go?

— Arizona’s agricultural consumption

70–80% of Arizona’s water goes to agriculture.

🌰 Pecan

  • 1 pound requires 1,800–2,200 gallons
  • Massive pecan farms near Tucson
  • Some pump millions of gallons per day

🐄 Alfalfa

  • One of the thirstiest crops in the U.S.
  • Year-round irrigation
  • Some farms pump millions of gallons daily
  • Saudi companies grow alfalfa in Arizona and export it overseas

👕 Cotton

  • A traditional Arizona crop
  • Water use spikes in summer heat

🏜 Tucson Is Literally Sinking

According to USGS and ADWR:

✔ Parts of Tucson sink 0.5–1 inch per year.

Over‑pumping groundwater causes:

  • Aquifers to empty
  • Clay layers to compress
  • Land to sink
  • Pipes to break
  • Roads to crack
  • Buildings to tilt
  • Permanent loss of groundwater storage
  • Increased dependence on CAP water

Tucson is slowly collapsing because of water.

🌵 And at the end of this chain reaction,

we end up fighting over water at home

California needs water daily for vegetable farm. I need double‑filtered water just to drink.

Two states Both needing water. Both living in a city that’s running out of it.

Our tension isn’t personal — it’s a symptom of Arizona’s war with California over water.

🏞 The Clean Water of Ely — “Ely‑ang”

— A completely different world compared to Tucson

In Ely, Nevada, I drink straight from the tap. No filter. No sediment. Just clean, soft, delicious water.

Ely’s water comes from:

  • Sierra Nevada snowmelt
  • Naturally filtered groundwater
  • Low mineral hardness
  • Balanced natural composition

It’s so clean we jokingly called it “Ely‑ang”, as if it were a premium French bottled water.

🌄 Why I Talk About Ely

— It was my family’s town, and the perfect contrast to Tucson

Ely isn’t famous. It’s not a tourist hotspot.

But it was my dear friend and my American mom Carol’s town, and my in‑laws used lived there. We visited all most every year.

Now that Carol is gone, we’ll rarely go back — but the memory of that water stays with me.

Ely is the “control group” that shows exactly what Tucson has lost.

🏜 And that clean Ely‑ang water

is exactly what wealthy Las Vegas investors are buying up

This is the heart of the Southwest water crisis.

Las Vegas consumes 23.3 billion gallons of water per year. Over 90% comes from the Colorado River (Lake Mead).

If Lake Mead fails, Las Vegas fails.

So they’re desperate for alternative water sources.

Their solution?

✔ Buy ranches in Ely and White Pine County

✔ Not for the land — but for the water rights beneath it

They are literally buying the future of Ely‑ang.

Ranches that used to be open land are now fenced off and inaccessible. Trails we used to ride dirt bikes on are blocked at the entrance.

Because:

✔ Water is now more valuable than land.

⚠️ Warning: Most people won’t understand this crisis until water stops coming out of their own tap

Tucson sinking, Lake Mead shrinking, Ely’s water rights being bought, Vegas panicking, Arizona agriculture consuming millions of gallons…

These are all signs that the Southwest is running out of water.

Most people won’t notice until their faucet runs dry.

But I feel it every day in Tucson, and I remember what real water tasted like in Ely.

  • Lake Mead

(Pecan)

(Cotton)

Lake Mead
