**The Question I Hear Everywhere Abroad:
“Are you from South Korea or North Korea?” What That Question Really Reveals**
Whenever I travel abroad, I hear the same question over and over:
“Are you from South Korea or North Korea?”
At first, I laughed it off. But eventually, it became frustrating — because the question itself shows how little the world knows about North Korea’s reality.
North Koreans cannot travel abroad
Most foreigners don’t know this.
North Korean citizens cannot:
- obtain a passport
- cross borders freely
- take international flights
- go on vacation abroad
- choose to study or work overseas
The only North Koreans who ever leave the country are:
- state-assigned laborers
- diplomats or trade officials
- a tiny elite approved by the regime
In other words, ordinary North Koreans can never travel internationally.
Yet foreigners casually ask:
“Are you from North Korea?”
That question comes from not knowing the truth.
Only South Koreans can travel freely around the world
To foreigners, the Korean Peninsula looks like:
- one language
- one ethnicity
- similar appearance
- similar culture
So they assume both Koreas function similarly.
But the reality is completely different.
South Koreans can:
- obtain passports
- travel to most countries freely
- study abroad
- work abroad
- live abroad
North Koreans cannot.
They live under:
- no freedom of movement
- no access to outside information
- no ability to travel
- severe punishment for crossing borders
If you don’t know this, asking “South or North Korea?” feels normal.
They simply have no way to know
“They have no channel to understand that only South Koreans can travel freely.”
Exactly.
North Korea is:
- closed
- censored
- isolated
- controlled
- hidden from the world
Foreigners rarely see:
- North Korean daily life
- North Korean culture
- North Korean speech
- North Korean restrictions
- North Korean suffering
Without that knowledge, they cannot understand why the question itself is absurd.

**외국에서 가장 많이 듣는 질문: “한국이야? 북한이야?”
그리고 그 질문이 말해주는 세계의 무지**
외국을 여행할 때마다 하루에도 몇 번씩 듣는 질문이 있다.
“Are you from South Korea or North Korea?” 너 한국 사람이야, 북한 사람이야?”
처음엔 웃으며 넘겼다. 하지만 나중에는 조금 짜증이 났다. 왜냐하면 이 질문 자체가 북한의 현실을 전혀 모르는 데서 나온 질문이기 때문이다.
북한 주민은 외국 여행을 할 수 없다
외국인들은 모른다. 북한 주민이 여권을 만들 수 없고, 국경을 넘을 수 없고, 비행기를 탈 수 없고, 해외 관광이라는 개념 자체가 존재하지 않는다는 사실을.
북한 주민이 외국에 나오는 경우는 단 하나다.
- 국가가 지정한 노동자
- 국가가 파견한 외교·무역 인력
- 극소수의 특권층
즉, 일반 주민은 절대 외국 여행을 할 수 없다.
그런데도 외국인들은 아무렇지 않게 묻는다.
“북한 사람이야?”
그 질문은 북한 주민의 현실을 모르는 데서 나온다.
세계에서 자유롭게 여행할 수 있는 한반도 사람은 ‘대한민국 국민’뿐이다
외국인들은 남북한의 차이를 모른다.
그들에게 한반도는:
- 같은 언어
- 같은 외모
- 같은 문화
- 같은 민족
이렇게 보인다.
하지만 현실은 완전히 다르다.
대한민국 국민은:
- 여권을 만들 수 있고
- 세계 대부분의 나라를 자유롭게 여행할 수 있고
- 해외에서 공부하고
- 해외에서 일하고
- 해외에서 살아갈 수 있다
반면 북한 주민은:
- 이동의 자유가 없고
- 해외 정보 접근이 불가능하고
- 외국 여행은 꿈도 꿀 수 없고
- 국경을 넘는 순간 ‘범죄자’가 된다
이 차이를 모르면 “한국이야? 북한이야?”라는 질문이 자연스럽게 나온다.
그들은 알 수 있는 통로가 없다
맞다. 외국인들은 북한 주민의 현실을 접할 기회가 거의 없다.
북한은:
- 폐쇄되어 있고
- 정보가 차단되어 있고
- 주민들의 일상이 외부로 나오지 않고
- 독재 체제가 모든 것을 숨기기 때문이다
그래서 외국인들은 북한 주민이 해외에 나올 수 없다는 사실을 모른다.
그래서 나는 이 이야기를 쓴다.
외국인들이 나의 글을 읽으면 “Are you from North Korea?”라는 질문이 얼마나 현실과 동떨어진 질문인지 비로소 이해하게 될 것이다.
그리고 그 이해는 누군가에게는 처음으로 북한 주민의 현실을 깨닫는 순간이 될 것이다.
