✨ Bangkok Travel Diary 2026 — A Trip Where the Heat, Water Guns, and My Body Made All the Decisions
This Bangkok trip… let’s just say it didn’t go according to my beautifully organized plan. The heat was brutal, Songkran turned the streets into a nationwide water‑gun battlefield, and my body kept saying, “Let’s not.”
So the trip became less about what I wanted to do and more about what Bangkok would allow me to do.
🌿 Manpai Sainam: The Only Day That Behaved
The day after we arrived, we went straight to Manpai Sainam Café & Restaurant.
The restaurant features private bungalow-style rooms by the lake, where families and couples can dine, enjoy the air conditioning, feed the koi, and relax on hammocks.
We enjoyed stir-fried morning glory, fried sea bass, and barbecue freshwater prawns dipped in special Thai sauces.
It was a very unique space where we could eat and rest comfortably inside a cool private bungalow.
It was peaceful, breezy, warm— basically the opposite of everything Bangkok usually is.
Honestly, this was the only day that followed my plan. The rest of the trip? Bangkok said “Nope.”
🛶 ICONSIAM: Our Accidental Base Camp
Our hotel was across the river from ICONSIAM, and the shuttle boat had one mission in life:
- Leave the hotel
- Go to ICONSIAM no matter what
- Drop people off
- Pick up people going to Saphan Taksin
- Repeat forever
So whether we liked it or not, ICONSIAM became our base camp.
Too hot? ICON. Songkran chaos? ICON. Hun tired? ICON. Need food? ICON. Need AC? ICON. Need to exist? ICON.
By day three, we weren’t even pretending anymore. We just walked in like employees.
🚤 Hop On Hop Off Boat → Wang Lang Market → Wat Arun (from the outside)
We took the Hop On Hop Off boat, and the river breeze slapped me in the face like, “Welcome back.”
💊 Wang Lang Market — The Diamond Pharmacy That Betrayed Us
We went to Wang Lang Market to visit Diamond Pharmacy, but Songkran said, “Not today, not tomorrow, not for 15 days.”
Luckily, because of the big hospital nearby, the whole area was basically Pharmacy Disneyland.
We grabbed what we needed from random pharmacies, then later went to a giant Boots for the rest.
🩲 The Legendary Bamboo Underwear Deal
Wang Lang Market prices were insane.
I bought seven bamboo‑cotton underwear for 60 baht. Yes, seven. Yes, 60 baht total. Yes, they’re amazing.
Cool in summer, don’t cling, dry fast, soft as clouds— honestly the best purchase of the entire trip.
If I could’ve bought 20, I would’ve.

🕌 Wat Arun — The “Drive‑By” Version
Wat Arun is a beautiful temple, but it has no shade. We didn’t want to brave the April heatwave inside Wat Arun.
While people were briefly being loaded and unloaded on the boat, we started aggressively snapping photos.
Wat Arun is a place where everything is best seen early in the morning when the sun illuminates the temple. I decided that next time, I would go early in the morning to do an “open run.”
Still beautiful though. Still counts.
🌙 Asiatique Night 1 — The Singer Who Made My Day
The first night at Asiatique, the restaurant had live music, and the singer was genuinely fantastic.
I gave her a thumbs‑up, and she reacted like I handed him a Grammy.
Her smile alone made the whole night feel magical. And the food was amazing.
🌙 Asiatique Night 2 — We Returned for the Vibes… and Got None
The vibes were so good on the first night that we went again.
But it was a weekday. No crowd. No music. Just silence and humidity.
We ate pu pad pong curry next door, and that’s how I earned an allergic itch that followed me all the way back to Korea.
Thanks, Bangkok.
🎒 Elephant Tote Bags — The True Treasure of Asiatique
In a tiny alley behind Asiatique, a shop sold elephant tote bags for 60 baht.
I bought 3, Yuni bought 3, the youngest bought 5 because apparently she was starting a tote bag business.
We used them as gift bags, and they looked surprisingly classy. Like “budget luxury.”
💆♀️ The Thai Massage That Broke My Spirit
At the hotel, the three of us got a very intense Thai massage for over two hours.
All three combined cost about $150, which is great— until the next morning.
I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a slow‑moving truck.
I wanted another massage before the flight, but my body said, “Try it and see what happens.”
So we skipped it.

🚇 BTS City Tour — Because My Body Refused More Pain
Instead of another massage, we explored Bangkok by BTS.
Since the BTS runs on elevated tracks, we got a great view of the city— cars crawling, buildings glowing, Bangkok stretching endlessly.
In the BTS, I saw a very large golden Buddha statue by the canal originating from the Chao Phraya River, and its name is Wat Phat Nam.
The Buddha statue is so large that it can be recognized at a glance even from a distance. Just two years ago, Wat Pak Nam was not famous, but nowadays, a challenge of taking photos with Wat Pak Nam in the background at pretty cafes is trending among travelers. I definitely plan to visit it next time.
We got off at Siam and immediately experienced traffic hell.
People everywhere, cars everywhere, chaos everywhere.
Then we went to Asok, found a nice café, and cooled down with iced Americanos like survivors of a desert expedition.
🌊 The Chao Phraya From Our Hotel — A River With Two Completely Different Lives
From our hotel window, the Chao Phraya looked like a playground for travelers— a wide, shimmering river inviting people to hop on boats and explore canals like they’re starring in their own travel documentary.
But for Bangkok locals, the river isn’t a backdrop. It’s a lifeline.
The water delivers groceries, takes people to work, and acts as a giant, slow-moving public transportation system. Meanwhile, I was standing there thinking, “Wow… and I complain when my Amazon package is one day late.”
🎉 At Night, the River Turns Into a Floating Festival
Once the sun starts to set, the river transforms.
Cruise boats decorated like floating Christmas trees glide up and down the water, packed with tourists enjoying sunset views, buffet dinners, and dancing like they forgot how hot Bangkok is.
It’s loud, bright, chaotic, and somehow charming— a floating party that never seems to run out of energy.
🌍 Paris Has the Seine, But Bangkok Has… This
People love comparing river cruises to the Seine in Paris, but honestly?
The Chao Phraya has a depth and width that makes the Seine look like a polite little stream.
This river has weight. History. Traffic. Drama. And at least three boats blasting karaoke at any given moment.
🚢 Early Morning Thoughts: The Barges Know Something
At dawn, I watched massive barges drifting slowly along the water, moving with the kind of confidence only things that weigh 10,000 tons can have.
And I thought:
“Somewhere at the end of this river, someone is definitely building a new road… or a skyscraper… or an entire neighborhood.”
Because in Bangkok, if something huge is floating down the river at sunrise, it’s probably headed straight for a construction site.
🌆 For People From Quiet Tucson, Bangkok Was Another Universe
When the heat got too much, we hid indoors, rode the BTS, watched people, watched the city, and enjoyed the chaos from a safe distance.
We drank iced americanos at a cafe and watched Chinese TikTokers take over the photo spots and make all sorts of shorts. It’s a good thing I don’t really like taking pictures, otherwise we would have almost gotten into a big fight over the seats.
Coming from quiet, sleepy Tucson, Bangkok felt like another universe.
The density, the speed, the noise, the humidity— everything was different.
And that contrast made the trip unforgettable.
Our first trip to Bangkok together as three sisters. we were exhausted from the April heat, jostled by crowds, and had a mental breakdown from the Songkran water bombs.

🚤 Hop On Hop Off 보트 → 왕랑시장 → 왓아룬
다음날은 Hop On Hop Off 보트를 타고 강 위를 건너다녔다.
