Mom’s 88th Birthday: A Memorable Family Trip to Korea

🌿 Our 2025 Korea Family Trip — A Very Real, Very Chaotic, Very Perfect Journey

1. How This Trip Even Happened

Before anything else — before Gyeongju, before Pohang, before Seoul — there was Mom’s 88th birthday.

We planned her birthday dinner at a restaurant overlooking Yoon Gun Neung, a royal tomb with a peaceful view. It wasn’t just a birthday party. It was the birthday we all quietly believed might be her last

My mom lived in the US for over 30 years. After my dad passed away, she became painfully lonely, and her health dropped fast. Her cardiologist told us her heart wouldn’t hold out much longer — no surgery options, nothing.

So Mom said the one thing that broke all our hearts:

“I want to spend my last years in Korea… with my son.”

We were sad, but we supported her. And just like that, our “Move Mom to Korea Project” began.

I had just come back from Thailand 5 months earlier, so another long-haul flight was basically impossible. But Mina bought my ticket and said, “Let’s go for 10 days. You need to be there.” So I went.

We gathered the whole family — siblings, cousins, my aunt — and decided to take Mom on a family trip after her birthday party. A trip made from love, fear, hope, and urgency.

2. Gyeongju — A City Wearing Makeup Over Ancient Bones

Gyeongju was busy preparing for APEC, so the whole city looked like it had put on full glam. Flower sculptures, shiny decorations, everything polished.

But once you step into Bulguksa, the noise disappears. A thousand years of silence sits there like a heavy blanket.

🌙 Night at Wolji & Donggung

And then… Gyeongju at night. Wolji and Donggung were pure magic.

Golden reflections on the water, the palace roof glowing in the dark, the air cool and still.

It felt like time stopped just for us.

3. Pohang — The Industrial Beast

From Gyeongju, we drove to Pohang. My athletic siblings went up the Skywalk, while I stayed with Mom and my aunt by the beach.

Pohang Steel was insane — massive structures on both sides of the highway, chimneys everywhere, black smoke rising like dragons.

You could almost feel the molten iron boiling inside.

Driving through the city made me proud of Korea’s power and growth.

4. Dinner, Daiso, and the Best Hotel Night Ever

We ate Korean beef – Han Woo on the way back, and then I discovered Daiso for the first time.

Of course I bought face masks, serums, creams — basically half the store.

Back at the hotel, we put on face masks, ate dried seafood from Pohang Market, and drank beer.

And I thought:

“This is my kind of happiness.”

5. A Trip Built by Family

This trip only happened because everyone pitched in:

  • Yuni planned Mom’s 88th birthday party
  • My brother rented a 15‑seater van
  • My youngest sibling booked the Gyeongju hotel
  • Mina bought my plane ticket

Everyone carried a piece of the journey.

6. Seoul — The Final Chapter

After Busan, Mina and I went back to Dongtan. Then we met up again in Seoul with:

Yuni & her husband, their son, my youngest sibling, Mina, and me.

We walked around Gyeongbokgung, Mina wore hanbok, and we ate North‑Korean style dumplings at “Goong” in Insadong.

But it was early May — Chinese Labor Day + Buddha’s Birthday — so Seoul was PACKED.

Myeongdong, Gyeongbokgung, Insadong… we were literally pushed around by crowds from China, Japan, and Europe.

It was chaos, but fun chaos.

7. The Legendary Myeongdong Shopping Moment

Okay… here’s the part that might get me in trouble.

I spent almost $1,000 at the Lajuran skincare store in Myeongdong. Yes, one thousand. If my husband ever finds out, he’ll absolutely lose his mind — but it’s too funny NOT to include.

And honestly? It was worth it. Three sisters used that stuff for a whole year.

Because I bought so much, Lajuran gave me a free suitcase. Perfect timing because Mina’s suitcase wheels were broken. She ditched the old one and walked out with a brand‑new one.

Travel magic.

8. Everyone Goes Their Own Way

After Seoul, I took Mina and my nephew Kai back to the US. Yuni and her husband went to Jeju with my youngest sibling and returned to Tucson two weeks later.

Our family scattered, reunited, scattered again — but this trip tied all of us together.

9. The End of Our 2025 Korea Trip

Mina and I walked through rainy Myeongdong, dragging our suitcases, and hopped on the airport bus.

Ten days. So much walking, eating, laughing, sightseeing, worrying, loving.

A trip built from family, held together by love, and remembered with warmth.

2025 Korea Family Trip — finished.
