This morning, curious to see how far my writing had traveled across the globe, I checked my blog’s visitor logs. One from China, one from India. The numbers for the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Korea—where I had expected—actually showed a steady increase. However, China was a real surprise. How did they come across my writing? In China, WordPress is often blocked due to the Great Firewall, and in India, internet usage patterns differ from those in Korea and the U.S., so it is likely rare for visitors to visit a personal blog. The sentences I jotted down to organize my memories must have been history they were hearing for the first time. Writings from a small room in a desert city have found their place in the understanding of people from distant lands. They crossed the Indian Ocean and seeped beyond the Great Wall. I don’t know why, but I find that irregularity strangely appealing. The moment a personal record becomes history, I felt that I made the right decision to write. To some, the story of my family must have been stranger than a novel, while to others, it must have been more vivid than history. I merely wrote down my memories, yet people discovered fragments of their own lives within them.
